JUNIOR LIFEGUARD PROGRAM TO START ON CAPE BRETON BEACHES
SYDNEY-This summer, the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service (NSLS) will be running a junior lifeguard program on Cape Breton beaches. This program is for youth between the ages of seven and 15 who can swim at least 25 metres and tread water for 2 minutes. Junior lifeguards spend a few hours each week learning and practicing both physical and technical skills with the local lifeguards.
“This is a great program for kids who love the water, but who want more than swimming lessons,” says Kieran Gallivan, Cape Breton area supervisor for the NSLS. “It gives young aspiring guards the chance to gain experience in the water and in rescue situations.”
On July 26 at Rissers Beach, junior guards will be able to compete at the annual junior lifeguard championships. At the championships, guards will compete in beach sprint, beach flags, board race, ocean relay and surf race events.
